Meaningful Connection’s Lifting Up Leadership™ is a model designed to create a new mindset that engages the heart and mind to work together more effectively in our day to day business interactions, as well is in our personal lives. It is based on an intention of love and gratitude for ourselves, our communities, and humanity for what is now and for what we wish to create in the world. It is an attitude of generosity with action that lifts up others to do their higher good.

Do You Look Like a Goofball on LinkedIn? Tips on What Settings to Change

No LinkedIn GoofBall Settings by Anne Pryor Meaningful ConnectionsMy clients know that I ‘change my oil’ every Sunday afternoon on LinkedIn. I get under the hood of my profile make a change to LinkedIn – add a new keyword or to let my network know what I desire.

I usually make a change to my Headline, Summary or Interests areas. Before I do this I make certain that my Settings are ‘turned down’, so that I don’t broadcast every ‘nit and gnat’ change to my network.

Here are tips to control the changes if you don’t change settings the updates will immediately be visible in your activity feed and broadcast to your network when you make changes. You can disable these updates by unchecking the box in your activity broadcast setting, accessible from the Privacy & Settings page.

NEW: YOU NOW HAVE THE ABILITY TO ADJUST THE SETTINGS WHILE EDITING YOUR PROFILE, ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR PROFILE:

  1. Go to Edit Profile; scroll down on the right side of your profile page.
  2. Click the green check mark in the “Notify Your Network?” box on the right side of the page.
  3. Choose “No, do not publish changes.”

IMPORTANT: CHANGES THAT TRIGGER UPDATES:

  1. Adding a PHOTO (Update last. Your connections will look at your profile and you want to Look Good!)
  2. Adding a NEW CURRENT POSITION (This will generate a “say congrats” update to your network). I make sure that if my clients are updating their Current job – adding a new position, that everything on their profile looks great. People will come by and view your profile.
  3. Adding a NEW WEBSITE LINK (add 3, people are checking these from an iPhone or Android)
  4. RECOMMENDING someone (Give ‘old fashion’ recommendations. The first 6 words are most important; really try to get their branding in the first sentence.)
  5. FOLLOWING a COMPANY (Blasts, unless you turn this setting down)
  6. Adding a CONNECTION – will send an update notice if you’ve chosen “Your connections” when you control who can see your connections.
  7. Adding additional SKILLS to your profile.
  8. SHARING content with your network.
  9. EDITING TITLE OF CURRENT POSITION (This will generate an update stating that “You’ve updated your experience section”)
  10. Current work experience ANNIVERSARIES (That’s why I do not put months, just years)
  • ADDITIONAL CHANGES THAT I HAVE NOTICED THAT ARE NOT IN THE LINKEDIN FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
  1. Changing your ZIP CODE / change the CITY (Blasts to your network that you moved – I can be embarrassing)
  2. Adding CONTACT information in the Address area (Never add your home address)
  3. Adding your BIRTHDAY (Never add the year! I add my birthday the day before and take it out the day after – that way people wish me happy birthday on the day
  4. Adding PUBLICATIONS and MEDIA RICH FORMAT

TIP: After I make an update I immediately go to the Home page and check if it posted. If it did and I didn’t want it to, I roll over the top right of my post and click DELETE – poof – it is gone.

THESE UPDATES GO OUT NO MATTER WHAT (even if you have changed the Settings):

  1. CONNECTING with other LinkedIn members. Note: You can turn the notification off when you make a new connection by hiding your connection list. (I highly suggest this for job seekers, in jobs, that are connecting with recruiters)
  2. GROUP activity – Note: You now have the option to turn this off within your Group settings, if you don’t, an activity will post. Learn more about preventing updates when you join a group (Under the Groups, Companies and Applications area)
  3. SHARING or PUBLISHING content (posting on the Home page)
  4. UPGRADING to a Premium account (doesn’t apply to Job Seeker account – I have Sales Premium)
  5. FOLLOWING IN PULSE: an Influencer, Media Channel, or Publisher (I suggest you do this during off hours, Friday night at 10:00 pm)

15 LinkedIn Tips on How to Help Recruiters and You Be Successful

My friend Andrew Ronningen, a retained executive recruiter and partner with a great guy, Doug Franchot, of Frachot Associates, met me for a meaningful connection lunch last week. I asked Andrew if he would share tips on how executive job seeker candidates can help recruiters be successful. He was thoughtful in his answers.  See if you are doing these things on your LinkedIn profile:

1) KEYWORDS, keywords, keywords – recruiters search for keywords from the job descriptions.  Be sure that your LinkedIn profile is updated with keywords for the positions that you are targeting. TIP: Update keywords in your Interest area each Sunday.  I do and I come up higher in searches.

2) Add SKILLS – include technical skills that are listed on job descriptions. TIP: Add up to 50 skills.  Recruiters with premium service get the top 24 LinkedIn profiles with top keywords skills searched pushed to them.

3) Ensure that the INDUSTRIES that you have experience in are listed in the profile. TIP: Change your Industry targeted each week.  You’ll come up in different searches.

4) Add the ZIP CODE, city and state where you choose to live.  Andrew said that he often starts a search within 25 miles of the zip code of the job he’s targeting. TIP:  Change your zip code each weekend if you’re targeting different locations.

5) Add COLLEGES and HIGH SCHOOLS – Andrew often searches for colleges and high schools as many executives are interested in returning back to their hometown areas. TIP: If you don’t choose to add your high school to your education then put it in the Interest area or under awards, if you have them.

6) Add AFFINITIES to your profile – Andrew often searches for an executive candidate that my like to return back to their home community.  An affinity might be the name of a MLB, NFL, National Football, or other college or high school team, leadership style, fraternities, sororities, associations or groups. TIP: You can add this to the Volunteer, Associations, Causes, Organizations or Interest areas and it will be picked up in search.

7) Get RECOMMENDATIONS – a LinkedIn recommendation can show characteristics not called out in the job descriptions.  These can justify or solidify a candidate. TIP: Recruiters do look for back scratching (you give and they give you one).  The first sentence of a recommendation is important.

8) Add MEDIA RICH FORMAT – recruiters like to see examples of candidate’s work. Andrew likes to see thought process.  Often they can see the strategy and tactical skills with examples like reports, PowerPoint documents and whitepapers. TIP:  If you don’t have such documents recreate a PowerPoint presentation to show process, strategy and thought leadership.

9) Number of CONNECTIONS matter – get more than 500+ connections.  This ensures that if you’re in a sales role that you can hit the ground running. TIP: Be sure your connections are people you know, like and trust that know, like and trust you.  Make sure the connections are in the Hubs that you are targeting.

10)  Add GROUPS – recruiters join and leave Groups based on their targeted search.  It’s important to participate in Discussions, recruiters take note of people starting and commenting in Discussions. TIP:  Ask a smart, insightful question in a Group.  When answering, be resourceful and add value.

11)  Use INMAIL – Andrew uses InMail to connect with potential candidates.  Check LinkedIn and respond via InMail quickly. TIP: If you do not respond within three days the InMails are returned to the recruiters.

12)  PERSONALIZE INVITATIONS – Always personalize your invitation to a recruiter.  Mention someone that you know in common or why you choose to connect. TIP: Don’t click the blue circle with the + sign or connect through a mobile app as these tools don’t allow for a personalized message.

13)  BE OPEN TO LISTEN – If you receive a call or email from a recruiter,  be open and listen to the opportunity. TIP: Even when you are not in search be courteous and reply to the recruiter.  You never know when you will need their help.  Recruiters remember people who help them.

14)  Add a CURRENT position – even if you are not working have a title and industry in the Current position.  This way you will come up in searches.  TIP: Also add your Board Positions, Associations and consulting opportunities if you have had them. Recruiters want to know what you’ve been doing.

15) Add a GREAT PHOTO: LinkedIn statistics show that you are 7 times more likely to be clicked on if you have a professional picture.  TIP: Andrew suggests that executives should dress as professionally as possible for the photograph.  A Shirt and tie and suit is always appropriate.

BONUS TIP:

16) Remove the words RESPONSIBLE FOR – recruiters are interested in quantifiable and measurable results, not just responsibilities.   TIP: in the Experience area under description be sure to add your key accomplishments and measurable results.

I am proud to say that Andrew and I were colleagues at Carlson Marketing Group where he was a successful executive and general manager.  Everyone loved working with Andrew – from colleagues to clients.  He always had a unique approach – he listened, asked great questioned, cared and thoughtfully created solutions that client’s loved – and he and Doug have taken that approach at their firm – a partnership based approach between employer and employee.

Andrew said that he always looks in his resume database first.  He invites you to send your resume to him at Frachot Associates. If you do, BE HELPFUL, if you are contacted by a recruiter and you are not the perfect candidate suggest other people in your network. TIP: Connect with recruiters on LinkedIn and keep your Connections open, when in job search.

It was an enriching week for the Meaningful Connections team. Kathleen, Anne and I had the opportunity to present at and hear two magnificently authentic and unforgettable key note speakers at two Twin Cities events. These are speakers that you want as friends once you’ve heard them. Speakers that you will secretly commit to supporting and spreading their good name every chance you get. These are speakers with the “Coolness Factor”.

At the annual Dakota County Chamber of Commerce Women’s Conference, where we presented strategies for networking and personal branding for multitudes of women entrepreneurs and leaders, we heard the effervescent and totally authentic key note speaker (aka Exceptional Executive) Jennifer “JJ” Schaidler. Her style was easy, engaging, backyard BBQ conversation – packed with warmth and humor.  In this style she imparted her priceless wisdom on Maximizing Your Career Path, gained from years of experience as a senior female leader in the executive suite.

JJ instantly won over the hearts and minds of the audience as she told one tale after another of the ups and downs of her career….the importance of taking risks, treating her employees as co-workers, embracing new opportunities…. all for the benefit of our professional growth. One might say that JJ’s personal brand was alive and well throughout her address – and because of that, she won us over.

Later that day we found ourselves enraptured by Jacquie Berglund, a CNN Leader with a Heart, and key note speaker at The Stir (an annual fundraising event for the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota).  From the moment Jacquie graced the stage, her passion and commitment to her lifelong mission of giving back captured and held the attention of an audience of 1200 throughout her presentation. One cannot fabricate that level of excitement and engagement without being authentic and real. Everything about the glint in her eyes as she spoke, her willingness to mix in the bumps with the triumphs, her gracious acknowledgement of all who helped her on her path, made us want to leap up and pitch in to support her mission.

So what is the Coolness Factor and when does it show up in your life?

  • It’s when you know yourself well enough to not want to fake it for the crowd
  • When you’re willing to show up 100% yourself for the sake of your message and your audience
  • When you stand so strong in whom you are that you face your fear, and the audience, with all you’ve got.
